Iceland Winter Ring Road Adventure

Once again we’ll be taking the road less-travelled. With just 6 guests we’ll take eleven days and ten nights to experience Iceland in the heart of winter, traversing the famed ring road in a spacious 4WD vehicle perfectly suited for the icy conditions. It’s a fabulous time to experience Iceland. Short days with beautiful low light and long nights affording opportunities to witness and capture the ephemeral beauty of the Aurora Borealis over snow-laden countryside.

This is not just a trip for photographers. We will get the full Iceland experience visiting geothermal and volcanic features, farms, glaciers, rugged black-sand beaches, waterfalls, mountains, fishing villages and more.

We will visit some well known photogenic locations but we’ll also visit locations very few visitors to Iceland ever experience in winter.

Our vehicle is perfectly suited for Icelandic winter conditions and our driver very experienced.

Capturing the aurora on clear nights will be just one of many photo bucketlist moments.

Day 1

Morning pickup in Reykjavik. We will drive to Thorufoss and Hraunfossar waterfalls and visit a local farm to capture images of the legendary and photogenic Icelandic horses.

Day 2

We head further north, across valleys and farmlands. We visit Kolugljúfur canyon and an old turf house farm called Glaumbaer. We drive ocean side into a small and very beautiful fishing village Siglufjordur which doubles as a ski resort.

Day 3

After a sunrise photo shoot near our harbourside hotel we head to Eyjafjördur and Godafoss, one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls. We will stay the night in Mývatn.

Day 4

Sunrise shoot at Namaskard thermal area. We visit a blue lake to photograph birds including Barrow’s Golden eye. We will photograph Godafoss from a different perspective at sunset and spend a second night at Mývatn.

Day 5

More wintery scenes involving hot springs and Icelandic horses before we head into the highlands for some abstract monochromatic mountain landscape photography. We hope to glimpse Mt Herdubreid when we get to Mödrudalur country hotel (with the best Arctic char in Iceland).

Day 6

First light over Möðrudalur and Mt. Herðubreið before heading to the east fjords where we return to sea level and experience totally different landscapes including the sea stack of Krossnes. Overnight in the fishing village of Hornafjörður.

Day 7

We head to the Glacier lagoon to photograph ice by day and by night. We will be staying close to the glacier lagoon.

Day 8

We spend the day in the Diamond Beach region to capture sunrise at Diamond Beach and the Fjallsárlón lagoon and outlet and look for reindeer and seals.

Day 9

Weather permitting we take a helicopter ride over a glacier in the Vatnajökull area for an exclusive remote ice cave shoot (all to ourselves).

Day 10

We start the day with a visit to the beautiful and accessible Svinafellsjökull glacier and make our way west finishing the day in Vik where we can capture the iconic Vík í Mýrdal Church and the ‘Trolls’.

Day 11

On our final morning we will photograph sea stacks at Reynisfjara at sunrise and visit Skógafoss and the lesser known Gluggafoss on our way back to Reykjavik. We will aim to have you back in Reykjavik between 5 and 6 pm.

Our experienced Icelandic guide and photographer will apply local knowledge to maximise opportunities which may result in changes to the itinerary. Flexibility is key to maximising the experience. Sunrise shoots at this time of year can be around 9am and sunset around 3-4pm. Prolonged golden hour on the south coast makes for great opportunities to capture lots of different compositions at sunrise and sunset.
