Emperors and Mountains of Dronning Maud Land
As far as we know Islands & Ice Travel in partnership with Ultima Antarctic Expeditions are the first to visit two Emperor Penguin colonies on a single Antarctic expedition. What made these visits even more special was our guests were among the first few dozen people ever to visit each colony. Both the Astrid and Lazarev North colonies were only recently discovered through analysis of satellite imagery. The Astrid colony was first visited in November 2023 and the Lazarev North colony on 5 November 2024. In addition our guests were the first ever tourists to visit the incredible Lake Untersee, home to Dale Anderson’s astrobiology camp and possibly the last as this site is set to become an ASPA (Antarctic Specially Protected Area). To top it off we had an extraordinary late afternoon flight to the Drygalski Mountains where we landed in three separate locations to admire the north and west faces of iconic Ulvetanna and the sheer west face of extraordinary Holtanna. The destinations were incredible and the flights to and from the destinations stunning, putting the fun and adventure back into flying.
